During the 112th Congress, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (H.R. 6050 and S. 3355) included a provision to protect the enrolled agent credential, along with other provisions relating to taxpayer rights and responsibilities. The House bill was sponsored by Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-CA), a member of the Ways and Means Committee. The Senate version of the bill was sponsored by former Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM). Senator Bingaman served on the Senate Finance Committee before retiring from his seat in Congress.
