General Information

NAEA Continuing Education Requirements

NAEA requirements for membership exceed the Internal Revenue Service’s standards: members, associates and academic associates must acquire 30 hours of CE per calendar year. Members who are on “inactive retired status” under Circular 230 qualify for NAEA Emeritus status and are exempt from the education requirement.

Enrolled Agent Renewal Requirements

IRS requirements for continuing education differ from NAEA’s requirements. In order to maintain the license, enrolled agents must complete 72 hours within a 3-year cycle based on the last digit of their social security number. The IRS CE reporting period is by calendar year, January 1 through December 31. The IRS enforces a 16-hour minimum per year, and requires 2 hours on Ethics per year. Learn more.

Scholarships

The National Association of Enrolled Agents Education Foundation (NAEA-EF) awards scholarships to both aspiring and current enrolled agents. The scholarship program receives its funds from NAEA members; with additional support from industry partners supporting the profession and offering a helping hand to the next generation of enrolled agents. The scholarships are designed to offset the registration cost for the education programs offered at NAEA conferences and for the Enrolled Agent Exam Online Self-Study Preparatory Course offered through NAEA and programs available through its state affiliates. Consideration will be given to applicants who have experience in taxation or accounting. Learn more about NAEA Scholarship opportunities.

Explanation of Levels

We acknowledge that tax professionals vary greatly in their experience and in the type of tax returns that they prepare. We have described sessions according to the following guidelines:

Intermediate - An intermediate level is most appropriate for the professional knowledgeable in the subject area. This level deals with less common tax situations and may include a more in-depth presentation of topics.

Advanced - An advanced level is designed for professionals with specialized knowledge or experience in the subject area. This level would also be appropriate for the experienced professional pursuing the knowledge to deal with more complex issues.

Update - An update level provides a general review of new developments. This level is for professionals with a background in the subject area that desire to remain current.
