Thursday, September 19, 2013: 7-8a.m. Registration – Class begins at 8 a.m.

  • Divorce & Taxes - Alimony, basis issues, marital asset settlements, and MFS tax limitations are all part of this discussion of the impact of divorce on taxes presented by Kevin Huston, EA, USTCP.   (2 hours IRS CE)

  • Update from NC Department of Revenue – Charles Helms, Director, Collections; Jeff Epstein, Chief Operations Officer; and Eric Wayne, Director, Sales Tax Division will represent their divisions within the NC Department of Revenue. (2 hours NAEA CE only)

  • Liens: Subordination, Discharge and Release – This one hour topic will be presented by IRS speakers.  (1 hour IRS CE)

  • Collection Guide to Payment Options - IRS speakers will discuss options taxpayers have in bringing their tax account up-to-date.  (1 hour IRS CE)

  • Medicare Investment Tax under the ACA - This session covers the new 2013 Medicare tax on Net Investment Income (NII) under the ACA.  R. Milton Howell, III, CPA, CSEP, CGMA, will focus on definitions of key terms, discuss examples, and highlight some strategies for managing this obligation. He will also provide updates on proposed Regs concerning this provision of the ACA.(1 hour IRS CE)

  • Ministers and Their Particular Tax Issues - Ministers’ tax returns often present a challenge.  This session presented by R. Milton Howell, III, CPA,CSEP, CGMA, will discuss the intricacies of properly preparing these returns.  (1 hour IRS CE)

Friday, September 20, 2013: 7-8a.m. Registration – Class begins at 8 a.m.

  • Tax Court – Kevin Huston, EA, USTCP, will explain tax court procedures, describe how to research tax court cases, and review recent cases which may affect our clients.  (2 hours IRS CE)

  • IRS Penalties – Reasonable or Unreasonable Cause – Jim Buttonow, CPA,CITP, of Beyond 415, shares what constitutes reasonable cause for Penalty Abatement and when to ask for it.  (2 hours IRS CE)

  • ACA Tax Issues for Small Employers and Individuals – Jason Cogdill, Benefits & ERISA Attorney, offers insight into how the Affordable Care Act’s provision for mandatory insurance will affect both employers and individuals.  (2 hours IRS CE)

  • Ethics Jeopardy 2013  presented by Kevin Huston, EA, USTCP.  This energetic and interactive session meets the requirements for two hours of Ethics CE for Enrolled Agents. Current ethics issues and topics for tax preparation and representation will be covered.  (2 hours IRS CE)
