IRS Issuing Letters to Thousands of Preparers Suspected of Filing Erroneous EITC Claims

November 13, 2013

IRS announced its intent to send letters during the months of November and December to preparers the agency has reason to believe are filing inaccurate Earned Income Tax Credit claims. Based on conversations with IRS officials, NAEA believes the target audience is roughly 7,500 preparers. The letters reportedly include references to the types of errors the preparers are believed to be making and give notice to the preparers that the IRS will continue monitoring the types of EITC claims they file.

IRS once again plans to conduct site visits to specific preparers to help educate them about meeting EITC due diligence requirements, EITC errors and how to avoid them.

The Service suggests preparers visit EITC Central on IRS' website to learn more.
