Former Congressman Billy Long was confirmed Thursday by the Senate to serve as the Commissioner of the IRS. The Senate confirmed Long along party lines with a 53-44 vote. The IRS faces an uncertain future under Long’s leadership, as there have been thousands of staff cuts from the agency, and its Inflation Reduction Act funding has been slashed significantly under the Republican-controlled Congress. In his confirmation hearing, Long said customer service would be one of his top priorities and also discussed the importance of modernizing IRS technology.
