What does it take to build a fulfilling career in tax and make a lasting impact on the profession along the way?

In today’s episode of The Enrolled Agent Advocate Podcast, host Brandy Spears sits down with Jennifer MacMillan, EA—NAEA’s 2025–2026 President and a lifelong advocate for the Enrolled Agent community. With more than 30 years of experience in representation, education, and leadership, Jennifer’s story is a powerful reminder that purpose isn’t just found in what you do—it’s shaped by the values you hold, the people you meet, and the causes you commit to.

Jennifer’s path to becoming an EA wasn’t a straight line. In fact, she didn’t even know what an Enrolled Agent was at the start of her career. But once introduced to the credential, everything clicked. Already the go-to person in her office for tough IRS calls and complex representation work, she realized this was exactly what she was meant to do. That spark ignited a lifelong commitment—not only to tax representation, but to championing the EA profession itself.

In this episode, Jennifer shares how volunteering changed the course of her career. By getting involved with her state society and eventually stepping into national roles through the National Tax Practice Institute® (NTPI) and the IRS Advisory Council (IRSAC), she found herself in rooms she never imagined—alongside tax attorneys, policymakers, and agency leaders. Her ideas weren’t just welcomed—they were valued. Volunteering didn’t just expand her network; it unlocked opportunities, shaped her leadership style, and even introduced her to the buyer of her practice years later.

“Volunteering has been the greatest thing for my career. If I hadn’t started volunteering, I seriously don’t know where I’d be right now.”

Jennifer’s story also underscores the power of intentionality. She didn’t just grow a business—she built a practice rooted in purpose and long-term value. And when it was time to transition, she passed it on to someone who shared her vision and values—someone she met through her professional community. That kind of legacy doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through relationships, integrity, and a willingness to lead.

Now, as NAEA’s President, Jennifer is focused on raising the visibility of the EA credential, strengthening relationships with the IRS, and ensuring Enrolled Agents are seen—and heard—at every level. From mentoring the next generation to representing the profession on national stages, her mission is clear: to advocate for those who advocate for taxpayers.
