The NAEA Board of Directors met on September 19, 2025, to review key initiatives, hear updates, and make decisions that will guide the association in the months ahead. Here are the highlights you need to know:

Celebrating Success and Visibility

President Jennifer MacMillan opened the meeting by celebrating the success of this year’s Tax Summit, which received excellent feedback from members and attendees. She also noted a fun moment of national recognition: “Enrolled Agent” appeared as a clue in the USA Today crossword puzzle, showing how our awareness efforts are paying off!

The board also continued conversations about expanding engagement with the growing number of EAs in India and refining NAEA’s relationship with Intuit to ensure it serves our members’ best interests.

Building EA Awareness and Advocacy

Executive Vice President Meg Killian shared updates from this year’s IRS Tax Forums, where NAEA connected with many future EAs and recruited new members. She emphasized that the narrative is changing: more people already know what an EA is, and many are in the process of becoming credentialed.

Looking ahead, NAEA will host EA Advocacy Week in November. Members will be encouraged and supported in visiting their legislators in their home districts to raise awareness of the EA credential. Resources, talking points, and sign-up opportunities will be shared in the weeks ahead. EA Advocacy Week 2025 – Sign Up

Meg also reminded members about the importance of supporting the NAEA PAC, a nonpartisan way to ensure the EA voice is heard on Capitol Hill. NAEA PAC | Advocacy for Enrolled Agents

Advocacy in Action: Oregon Licensure

Guest speaker Jenny Dresler from the Oregon Public Affairs Council briefed the board on efforts to eliminate Oregon’s licensure requirement for EAs. While this work is complex, NAEA is committed to moving the issue forward and securing practice parity for all EAs that are serving clients in Oregon.

To support this advocacy initiative, the Board approved up to $18,000 from the Legal Defense Fund for lobbying efforts. Members can help by contributing to the Legal Fund.

Supporting New Members

The New Member Task Force, chaired by Dannie Lynn Murphy, presented a white paper with strategies to better welcome and engage new and diverse members.

Recommendations include:

  • A structured onboarding process and welcome toolkit.
  • Mentorship and peer-led communities.
  • Leadership pathways for early-career EAs.
  • Greater inclusion of non-traditional practitioners.

These efforts will roll out in phases over the next 18 months to strengthen member engagement and retention.

Strong Financial Health

Treasurer Ed Ryan reported that NAEA’s finances remain strong, with unrestricted net assets at $696,000. The Board also approved moving $250,000 into long-term investments to support sustainable growth while keeping a healthy reserve.
